Building the place where design comes home:
The Hamilton Parker Company Story
We strive to create the single best experience for your home project and design needs.
In 1934, I. H. Schlezinger & Sons purchased a company located on Vine Street in Columbus, Ohio, that was about to fold under the economic constraints of the Great Depression: Hamilton-Parker Fuel and Supply. Alvin Lewin, Schlezinger’s son-in-law, was brought in from Dayton to run the company, and he and his wife, Gertrude, purchased the small business later the following year. Alvin Lewin was successful in turning things around and for the next thirty years, the company thrived, focusing primarily on selling coal, with a small building and foundry supply business.
In the 1950s, the coal business began to dwindle and Lewin shifted the business to construction supply sales, the start of what would prove to be a longstanding pattern of horizontal growth and diversification. Soon enough, a second generation of the Lewin family joined the company, when Alvin and Gertrude’s son Milton was brought on board full-time in 1960. That same year the company was incorporated, was renamed The Hamilton Parker Company and construction began on a new facility.
Under Milton Lewin’s leadership, the company continued to diversify its product offerings over the next several decades, with brick offered in the 1960s, prefabricated fireplaces introduced in the 1970s, tile in 1982 and finally, residential garage doors in 1993. With the expanded product selection, it soon became clear that an additional location was needed and in 1997, the company opened a store in Delaware, Ohio, 30 miles north of Columbus. In 2000, growth continued with a dramatic shift: The relocation from the company’s original location on Vine Street to its present Leonard Avenue showroom. The current showroom – a state-of-the-art facility showcasing all of Hamilton Parker offerings under one roof – is a nationally recognized, award-winning resource for builders, designers, architects and retail customers all over the region.
After serving as president for five years, Milton’s son, Adam Lewin, purchased the company in 2005, becoming the third generation of the Lewin family to lead The Hamilton Parker Company. In 2009, Adam oversaw the 75 year anniversary celebration of the business his grandfather had acquired so many years ago. With the January 2010 acquisition of Mount Vernon Mantel Company™ and the August 2011 launch of a boutique tile shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, Adam continues the tradition of growth started by his grandfather.
